The perfect place for nature lovers. Their greenhouses are filled with enchanting plants, sculptural succulents, green leafy ferns, heavenly hydrangeas, scented jasmine plants along with thoughtfully sourced home accessories, rusticated antiques and idyllic lifestyle pieces.

It is particularly lovely on a sunny day when the sun-drenched greenhouse becomes alive when girlfriends meet for a spot of lunch and a catch-up, families get together, grandparents have lunch with their grandchildren, couples enjoy spending time together or simply when one has a spare few hours to spend time with oneself. The perfect spot to people watch, write, have a casual lunch filled with tasty & healthy dishes and have a break from the day to day routine. I opted for a little lunch at The Tea Room to write my blog whilst enjoying the sunshine. I was going to do this three weeks ago, but with urgency I had to get on a plane and fly to Buenos Aires, Argentina due to my mother’s ill health. Fortunately she has recovered and I can now sit down, enjoy the spring weather, the scent of jasmine and tell you my story about this enchanting venue.

Petersham Nursery is a family business bought by The Boglione Family. In 1997, Gael and Francesco Boglione moved their young family from London to Richmond. Their new home, Petersham House overlooked a local plant nursery. After a tip-off from their friend Mick Jagger and to save it when threatened by developers, Francesco bought the nursery. The two ‘Haute Bohemians’ restored and transformed the place and in 2004 opened the doors to this enchanting place – a solid concept of positive living, a lifestyle destination, a reflection of their individuality; creative and business minds.

“Petersham Nurseries has created a place of calm where you can reconnect with nature”. Lara Boglione.

In 2011, their eldest daughter, Lara Boglione became the managing director for Petersham Nurseries. Father and daughter spent a number of years travelling to India and around the world and together they developed the shop’s international buying links. Lara is the creative visionary behind bringing Petersham Nurseries to Covent Garden. In 2013 Lara and her husband, Giovanni Mazzei, founded and established Petersham Wine Cellar – a selection of hand-picked Italian wines. Today she leads a growing aspirational brand, inspired by nature, her family’s Italian heritage and her principles of sustainability and ‘slow living’.

I was incredibly lucky to meet the Visual Merchandiser (VM) for the shop, Candice Bertrand. She joined the team three years ago. Originally from Strasbourg, she trained as an interior designer and worked in Paris for an interior design company. She then freelanced between countries as an interior stylist and after a while decided to take the plunge and moved permanently to London. She switched from the architectural world of auto cad to a freer and dynamic field- Visual Merchandising. She fell in love with the environment and looks forward to commute from West Hampstead to Richmond. She is an influencer for the buying team and accompanies them in buying trips to Paris, trade fairs and exhibitions.

She has her own ideas and is fascinated by light, colour and texture and oh boy it shows! Every corner is as exciting and inviting as the others. I can easily relate to her flawless work. She oozes style, self confidence and she is excellent with customers. There is an effortless synergy between the homeware shop and garden shop. Both teams have a strong connection but each have their own area of expertise. One thing they have in common is knowledgeable and friendly customer service.

What caught my eye…

I was drawn to this luxurious lamb’s leather cushion. Soft to the touch, embroidered using the technique of Boutis Provencal. Each cushion has an indigo dyed lining. The boutis, also known as embroidery with a cramped cord or Marseilles sting, is an embroidery “stamping” process which means to draw or stuff from inside. The technique of this “atypical” embroidery is the assembly of two pieces of leather, sewn together, by hand and at very small points, according to a previously drawn pattern.

Petersham Nurseries is the epitome of natural beauty in the simplest things. A hidden gem in London.

Style inspiration through my eyes…
